Memorial to the life and achievements of "The Great Synthesiser" Saint Wallace Hume Carothers (April 27, 1896 – April 29, 1937) He was an American chemist, inventor and the leader of organic chemistry at DuPont, credited with the invention of nylon.
Despite his success with nylon, he felt that he had not accomplished much and had run out of ideas. He killed himself well before seeing a pair of "nylons" - the most successful brand name ever, still used daily by scientists as well as you and me.

(The Carothers biopic needs a big rewrite. I have him croaking in a bed when his faithful assistant arrives, glides her skirt off and models the prototype pair of fully fashioned nylons. Inventor checks out dreamily, knowing he has put a new lust into the hearts of the citizenry.)
